This is continued from my previous entry. On Monday, October 5, Cade and I decided to go to Ginnie Springs Outdoors, a privately owned park on the Santa Fe River that has multiple springs and rents out kayaks, canoes, and tubes. The springs at Ginnie, going in order from upstream to downstream, are the Devil’s Spring System (which includes three interconnected caves in one run), Ginnie Spring proper, Dogwood Spring, Twin Spring, and Deer Spring. We also wanted to go to the nearby Blue Springs Park [update 2019: it is now named Gilchrist Blue Springs State Park], not to be confused with Blue Spring State Park near Daytona Beach. It started out as another overcast day, and it even rained a little on the drive over, but the sun came out a few minutes after we got there. As we were renting the kayak at Ginnie, they told us that Blue Springs was an easy distance upstream on the river. We put in at Ginnie Springs proper, which was pretty, but fairly run-of-the-mill after seeing a bunch of other gorgeous springs in rapid succession. As with all the springs in this particular park, the banks were mostly unmanaged aside from the wooden stairs leading into the water.

So yeah, that was our brief Florida spring tour. It would have been nice if It had been about 20 degrees warmer, but I’m glad we decided to go to Florida instead of the mountains due to the torrential downpours and flooding throughout the Carolinas and north Georgia.
From what we saw, my top three favorites (in no particular order) were Blue Hole Spring in Ichetucknee Springs State Park, Blue Springs (High Springs, FL), and the Devil’s Spring System at Ginnie Springs. If I’m ever back in the area, I would like to return to Ichetucknee Springs State Park and tube down the river. I would also like to check out some of the springs on the eastern side of the state in the Ocala National Forest area.
